    • Cal looks up into the sky, with an expression on his face like a small child meeting Santa. Snowflakes fall around him. Cal: "First snowfall! It's so--" Interrupting voice: "--_terrible_!"
    • On a branch above, Skip is frantically gathering acorns from the tree. Cal, with a disapproving glare: "What? Why are you gathering food? Winter is already here!"
    • Skip: "I had plenty of time, so I kept putting it off..." Cal: "But it's _December_!" A cross section of a hollow tree labeled "Skip's house" reveals that it is completely empty save for two acorns and a dust bunny.
    • Skip: "Yeah, well... Is it time for you to migrate yet?" Cal doesn't look amused.

Of course, it looks like Skip will be having plenty of time this year, what with it being our hottest year ever. Looks like Pert Penguin won't be the only one benefiting from a little change of climate.

This work originally appeared in the Cardinal Courier, the award-winning student-run newspaper at St. John Fisher College, between 2007 and 2011.
