    • Cal is reading a book. Skip: "Heya, Cal!" Cal: "Hi! How was the Natural History Museu--"
    • A creature resembling a young, furry elephant twice Cal's height is standing next to him. Cal, very shocked: "WHAAT THE--" Skip: "Oh, this little guy followed me home!"
    • The mastodon is now giving Cal a strong, loving squeeze with his trunk. Cal, flinching: "A baby mastodon followed you home?!" Skip, worried: "Yup! Can I keep him? Pleease?"
    • Still being squeezed, Cal smiles. Cal: "I guess if they haven't noticed him missing..." Cal: "Yipee! My very own mastodon!"

    The British Isles are full of wonderful creatures, it turns out.

    This work originally appeared in the Cardinal Courier, the award-winning student-run newspaper at St. John Fisher College, between 2007 and 2011.
