• A squirrel and cardinal stand on a branch overlooking Growney Stadium, where an announcer is saying, "And that's another goal by the Fisher Cardinals!" Skip: "Y'know, sometimes I worry that you might let this whole 'St. John Fisher Cardinals' business go to your head." Cal: "Of course not!"
    • They enter Cal's house, which is built into the tree they were standing on. Cal" "The school simply picked an animal commonly recognizable to this region. It doesn't mean anything special that I happen to be a cardinal living on this campus!" Announcer, outside: "And the game is over! The Cardinals win again!"
    • Cal continues: "I mean, U of R has the Yellowjackets as a mascot, for goodness' sake! Does that mean the humans there have a love of stinging insects? I don't think so!" Skip imagines a human and yellowjacket going in for a loving embrace. "Hmm, well then..."
    • Skip: "...How do you explain this giant framed painting of you and President Bain posing together?" He gestures towards such. Cal replies, "Uhh... heh. Coincidence?"

    Mascot

This time Dr. Bain, then- and current president of our beloved St. John Fisher College, makes a guest appearance. As you might assume based on his species (how stereotypifying of you), Cal is a bit of a “teacher’s pet” when it comes to the Fisher administration. Cal always tries to follow the rules, while Skip is generally indifferent to them, and their behavior often reflects those attitudes.

Unfortunately, the first strip is the only one I’ve ever drawn in color, as the page Skip & Cal appeared on in the Courier was rarely, if ever, printed in color. However, in later strips I do at least start to use shades of gray to add some life to the frames. So, if nothing else, at least you have that to look forward to.

Artist’s Apology for completely failing to accurately represent the architecture of Growney Stadium. My room in Haffey (my freshman dorm) did face that direction, but I believe there were too many trees in the way to actually see the stadium. (Go outside? Nah, when would I ever want to leave Haffey 2? Well, maybe on No-Pants Thursdays.)
